Penny’s 7760 Highway 36, Stockton UT Ordered: Blue Explosion Rating: A If you don’t mind a little bit of traveling to get an amazing burger, then Penny’s should shoot to the top of your list. That is unless you live in Stockton, Utah. But I’m going to go out on a limb and say you don’t live in Stockton, because almost no one does. Actually, Penny’s isn’t even in Stockton, I mean technically it is but it’s actually located on the highway out of town between Stockton and Dugway. (Yeah I know, just Google it.) This place really is in the middle of nowhere and unless you know a little bit of history its location will be a bit of a head-scratcher. Why build a restaurant in the middle of a desert in the middle of a low traffic highway? Well, from what I heard there used to be factory or a mine or something real near that location and the workers used to frequent the only restaurant nearby, Penny’s. The factory closed down years ago, but Penny’s stayed put and loyal patrons are still keeping them in business today. It’s a good thing too because Penny’s makes a damn good burger. However, my day did not start at Penny’s is started a couple miles up the road at a gun range where my wife and I and another couple got some good shooting practice in. That’s what Tooele county is good for after all, good old hill billy fun. A couple hours, a few hundred rounds, and two boxes of skeet later we were craving hefty amounts of man-food. How convenient that just a couple miles away was just that place to satisfy that craving. Penny’s has a very simple yet rustic theme: pennies. Every wall and counter top is adorned with copper and/or pennies of some kind, It’s quaint. Three of the four of us ordered the Blue Explosion burger which should tell you something about the burger. A soft Kaiser bun with a half pound patty, thick sliced ham, thick sliced bacon, and a creamy blue cheese dressing. It was very very good. I could not have thought of a better end to my morning of target practice. Their fries were fresh cut and also very good. My wife ordered her burger with tater-tots because she’s 5 years old at heart and if you can get past all the grease they soak up, they’re pretty good as well. I liked this burger so much that I implore you, nay, I order you to take a little road trip out of your way and give them your business. You will not be disappointed....

Poplar Street Pub 242 S. 200 W.  SLC, UT Ordered: The Prosciutto Burger Rating: B Life at my house has been crazy lately. Recently, I’ve been trying to switch jobs and in order to make the transition to the other job I had to intern part-time there while also working my current job. It has been a busy time for me. Working two jobs and slaving, SLAVING over a burger blog was taking its toll on me and needless to say my friends and family were beginning to wonder where I was because they never saw me anymore. Right when I was at my most busy my Sister Lizz texted me and said she was missing me and wanted to take me out for a burger as she had just found out about my blog (word travels very slowly in my family). We made the date, I had one free hour on Saturday, if I woke up an hour early. Sleep was a big deal at this time but I was willing to make the sacrifice, after all I missed my sister too. Saturday came aaaaaand I slept in, in fact I forgot about the lunch date until the next weekend. After grovelling, she agreed to try again the following Saturday. Saturday came, I woke up an hour early and headed to my sister’s house and she didn’t answer. All the lights were out, we had missed each other again. Or so I thought, after 10 minutes of knocking she came to the door looking like she had just woken up, because that’s exactly what had happened. This time she forgot, so in my book I think we’re even. Anyway, we laughed about it and she put herself together and we went out to Poplar Street Pub. We took a seat on their big patio out back and each ordered a burger, I ordered the Prosciutto Burger and the garlic fries. The fries were floppy, wet, and disappointing but the burger was pretty good. It’s a very fresh burger with a good thick patty, crispy fried onions, and a generous portion of cured pork on top. It was a pretty good burger, maybe a touch dry, but I would recommend it to anyone. But even better was the company. Thanks sis! Sorry for standing you up, but I’m glad we were able to make it work eventually. Keep me posted for when you want to take me out again. And good news, the internship hired me full time so I quit my other job. I can live life again! For those of you working multiple jobs, I salute you. Working more...

George’s Corner Restaurant and Pub

St. George Blvd, St. George Utah Ordered: Bacon Mushroom Swiss Cheeseburger Rating: B+ I recently found myself in St. George to celebrate Whitney’s Grandma’s 80th birthday and while I was there the whole family went out to get burgers at George’s Corner Restaurant and Pub. We hadn’t planned on the whole family to go with us, it was originally just going to be Whitney and I but when we shared our plans everyone insisted they tag along. You should understand that because of how my brain works I don’t really think people are interested in what I like so I usually just assume I’ll enjoy what I enjoy by myself. But now that I blog about burgers suddenly everyone trusts my recommendations on food. To me, it is a very strange thing to proclaim that I’m going to go do something and then have everyone suddenly want to follow me because they are sure what I have planned will be enjoyable for them as well. I’m still not used to it, but it is flattering as well as kind of stressful because I try so many new places and not all of them are good so there is a possibility that I could be leading everyone into a bad experience. But George’s Corner was not a bad experience and it was nice to have everyone there together. George’s Corner serves a variety of options other than burgers, but obviously I was only interested in the burgers. They follow the build-your-own-burger model in which they just give you a flat price for a burger and any topping you want are extra. This gives you a huge range in options and was kind of nice for a change. I created my burger with sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, bacon and Swiss cheese. Just look at that cheese! It was a very good burger though perhaps a bit on the dry side and the battered fries were crunchy and delicious. My father in law even let me try a bite of  his curry lamburger which was very different but also very good. We also ordered their Chili Mint Lemonade just to be adventurous. We had a kick watching everyone’s faces when we let them have a sip. It’s a good drink, though not very pleasant. . . If that makes any sense. Grandma surprised and impressed us all when she ordered a big burger with the rest of us and even more surprised and impressed when she finished it. Go Grandma! SLC, UT Ordered: Roquefort Bacon H with fries & Root Beer Rating: B My two loves Root Beer and Burgers are the focus of Hires Big H, so of course it was inevitable that I would eventually pay them a visit. Seriously, what a winner of a combination. Hires Big H is a staple to the historic Salt Lake Valley and ever since I started this blog I have been told by many people that I needed to dedicate a blog post to them. Hire’s Big H has a family owned diner feel to it which is always a good sign when it comes to burgers. They serve all your typical diner goods but they put an emphasis on burgers and their own brand of root beer. Also, for you pizza lovers, this company also owns an operates Litzas Pizza which directly next door. They make a pretty good pie. Before I go any further I feel the need to give a simple Root Beer history lesson. Charles E. Hires lived in Salt Lake City for a time before he invented Root Beer in Pennsylvania where it was actually first intended to be an herbal tea, which makes sense when you learn that original root beer was brewed from roots, herbs, and bark. Mr. Hires is to blame for the explosion of soft drinks from that point on because he aggressively advertised his soda by coining it’s name “Root Beer” and plastering his brand anywhere he could. He even touted its many health benefits, he was a pharmacist after all. There is a big misconception about Hires however. Many believe that Hires Root Beer is served at Hires Big H. It is not. Let me repeat, ‘Hires’ brand root beer is not served at Hires Big H, at least not the original Hire’s root beer invented by Mr. Charles Hires anyway. Hires Big H serves their own brand of root beer. Also, original Hires root beer is all but extinct today. Hire’s is still produced today but in very small amounts. The reason for this is that the original Hires recipe and brand is owned by the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group which also owns other root beer brands like A&W, IBC, and Stewart’s. These brands as well as Hires directly compete with each other which is an interesting dynamic seeing as they are all owned by the same parent company. So to narrow the competition Dr. Pepper Snapple Group has decided to put their money on the bigger brands that I just mentioned and only makes Hires in very small doses. Zinburger, Hot Dogs, and Pinball in Tucson.

Grant Rd., Tucson, AZ Ordered: Breakfast Burger Rating: B+ Recently my wife and I took a vacation to beautiful Tucson, Arizona where we spent lots of time enjoying the scenery, relaxing, hiking, and of course eating. For my wife and I eating is about 50% of our vacation experience no matter where we go. The weeks leading up to any vacation is spent researching fun places to visit as well as food hot-spots. Food, it’s just our thing. We hadn’t been off the plane for an hour before our local friends took us to their favorite restaurant in Bisbee, a little hot dog diner called Jimmy’s. They specialize in gourmet hot dogs, burgers, fries… etc. They are famous for their dogs so we ordered a few along with fries and of course some root beer to chase it. Very good diner, B+, and I would suggest it to anyone who is passing through the strangely artsy mining town of Bisbee. From what I can tell, Bisbee is to Arizona what Park City is to Utah. Full of hipsters, artists, wealthy people, and really good food. Sadly we didn’t have enough time to explore that town more, next time. The next day we traveled to Tucson where we swam, hiked at the Sonora Desert Museum (more like a zoo if you ask me), and then had dinner at a place called ZinBurger which is a trendy and modern burger place in the center of Tucson. The very first thing I noticed when they handed us our menus was “SAMBURGER” printed in all caps. I just had to try that burger right?! Wrong. At first glance it looks like it was made just for me, really it was kind of creepy how spot on it is to my kind of burger. The SAMBURGER is basically a big bacon cheeseburger with 1000 island dressing. . . They just HAD to ruin it with 1000 island dressing! As you know, I don’t care for the stuff, so I skipped over MY burger and settled on their Breakfast Burger instead, I was in a breakfast mood anyway. The Breakfast burger comes with a fried egg, avocado, cheese, bacon, and 0% 1000 island dressing. It’s a big burger and it is very good. It didn’t melt my brain with pleasure like the Bootlegger Burger did in my previous post, but it was still a very above average burger. I also tried some of my wife’s Zinburger which was also very good with its gracious amounts of cheese and caramelized onions. To end the meal we ordered a Butterfinger shake to share.
