Ordered: Scratch Burger & Bread Pudding
I love my job, I love it so much! I know this isn’t my job-job, to review burgers I mean, but I feel a certain responsibility to weed out the good burgers from the bad for all of you readers out there. I really don’t even mind having to eat the occasional C- or even D burger because I know there is a better one out there and I will find it. Well it happened, I found an amazing burger that makes all the stinkers worth my time. I found From Scratch and it was beautiful.
The only seats available when we visited the restaurant From Scratch were at the bar which I typically don’t prefer but it actually ended up being a lot of fun since our seats gave us a perfect view of the pizza chef and wood burning oven. I’ll take unashamed and impressive food preparation over the sports game I don’t care about blasting from the kagillian TV’s throughout the restaurant any day. It was entertaining to see him toss the crust, layer the pizzas with various toppings and then place them into the blaring oven. And it was great marketing for them, seriously, I can’t tell you how many times I told my wife “Okay, next time we come here one of us HAS to order the mushroom pizza!”. Yes, this place is trendy, very much so, but it didn’t come close to appearing pretentious. No one likes a hipster show-off and From Scratch was not ‘that’. This was simply a classy place with a trendy, but not annoying environment that served only a few items but served them near perfectly every time.
If you haven’t guessed, From Scratch prides itself in their ability of improving their dishes by making nearly everything “from scratch”; from their own milled flour to their homemade cheeses. And what they don’t make in-house, like their meats, they get from local sources. This is a dangerous claim at times because your ingredients can be as local and homemade as you like but they better taste good. If given a choice between all natural grass-fed-everything but bland tasting burger OR a processed-everything burger that will make you cry tears of joy. . . Let’s just say, I’m always up for a good cry.
The burger came out and it immediately reminded me of the burgers at Bachi Burger in Las Vegas which if you remember is one of my favorite burger places ever. The From Scratch burger is served with a thick and juicy patty, shoe string onions, and smoked cheddar all served on a large, soft-as-a-cloud brioche bun. So much great flavor and nay a hint of it being dry in any way. Hands down one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while, which I guess shouldn’t have surprised me since it won Best Local Burger last year. Their fries were also exceptional, they were fresh, dark, and crispy (just the way I like ’em) and even came with a homemade ketchup which was tasty, though (you know me) I just ate my fries plain because good fries don’t need any covering up.
For dessert we had their oven baked raspberry bread pudding, which, again, was amazing. Simple, yes, but perfect. I really have nothing negative to say, you’ll all just have to try it and let me know how your experience is. I’ve already planned what I’ll be ordering next time, because there WILL be a next time.
